2026 guide

Why can't I save a transparent PNG from Photoshop?

Short answer: your document is in CMYK mode. PNG only supports RGB (and grayscale); Photoshop silently blocks PNG export whenever the file is CMYK — and most users never notice the mode switch. Convert to RGB (Image → Mode → RGB Color) and PNG with transparency saves fine.

What CMYK is doing in your file

CMYK (Cyan/Magenta/Yellow/Key) is a print color model — four ink channels. PNG was designed for screens, where everything is RGB (red/green/light). The two models don't map cleanly: bright RGB blues and greens have no CMYK equivalent at all. That's why PNG simply has no CMYK mode, and why Photoshop — correctly — refuses to export one.

Why you ended up in CMYK without knowing

Three common traps: you started from a print template (business cards, flyers); you pasted content from a print-prepared PDF; or your color settings defaulted to "North America Prepress". None of these show a warning — the mode just sits there until PNG export fails.

The 10-second fix

  1. Image → Mode → RGB Color (top menu)
  2. File → Export → Quick Export as PNG — the PNG option now appears and stays
  3. Check Image → Mode afterwards: it should read "RGB Color / 8 bits"

If transparency still vanishes after export, check that your layer actually has transparency (checkerboard) and isn't on a white background layer.

The deeper gotcha: profile tagging

Even in RGB, an untagged PNG can display differently across apps — see our companion guide on why PNG colors look different. Converting CMYK→RGB also assigns a working profile; keeping it consistent prevents the next surprise.

FAQ

Can a PNG be CMYK at all?

No. The PNG spec supports only RGB, grayscale, and palette modes. Any tool claiming "CMYK PNG" is either converting silently or mislabeling. For print with transparency you want TIFF or PDF, not PNG.

Does converting CMYK to RGB change my colors?

It can. Out-of-gamut print colors get clamped to the nearest screen color, typically dulling saturated greens and blues. For screen work that's usually fine — for print-matched work, soft-proof before converting.

Is this new? Did PNG export used to work?

Photoshop has always blocked CMYK→PNG. What's new since 2021 tooling stagnated is that more CMSs and exporters hand designers CMYK sources, so the failure shows up constantly in 2025–26 forums.
