2026 guide

Why won't my WebP file open?

Short answer: the app you're using predates WebP support. WebP is a web-optimized format from 2010; Windows Paint only learned to open it in a 2023 update, Office apps still lag, and many CMSs export WebP by default while desktop tools trail behind. Converting to PNG solves it everywhere — use our free WebP to PNG converter.

Why WebP exists at all

WebP compresses 25–35% smaller than JPEG at similar quality, with transparency and animation support — for websites serving millions of images, that's real bandwidth. Google pushed it hard, Chrome/Android adopted instantly, and by the early 2020s most websites served WebP. Desktop software was never the target audience.

The support matrix in 2026

  • Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari 14+: full support
  • Windows Photos/Paint: supported since the 2023 Paint update; older Windows 10 builds don't
  • Microsoft Office: insert support arrived for some formats, PowerPoint/Word still refuse WebP on many installs
  • Old Photoshop: pre-23.2 has no native WebP

Why this keeps happening (12 years running)

The pattern repeats every few years: a platform (Facebook 2013, CMSs 2021, PPT workflows 2025) starts handing users WebP files, desktop tooling lags two to three years behind, and a wave of "why won't this open" posts floods the forums. The durable answer is boring: keep a converter bookmarked, or keep sources in PNG and let the website do the WebP conversion at publish time.

Convert without uploading

Most online converters send your file to a server. Ours decodes WebP with your own browser and saves a PNG — verify it yourself in the Network tab: nothing leaves your machine. Batch conversion with zip download is included, free.

FAQ

Is WebP lower quality than PNG?

WebP lossless is exactly equal to PNG. WebP lossy trades some quality for much smaller files — like JPEG does. The "quality" question is about which WebP variant you received, not the format itself.

How do I stop my phone/website from saving WebP?

On sites, the choice is the site's, not yours — they serve WebP to save bandwidth. For your own exports, choose PNG/JPEG in the export dialog. For everything else: convert on receipt.

Does converting WebP to PNG lose the animation?

Yes — PNG export takes the first frame. For animated WebP, convert to animated formats (GIF/APNG/WebP) instead; PNG is the wrong target for animation.
