DDS to PNG Converter

Drop a .dds texture and get a PNG immediately — decoded by a hand-written decoder running locally, batch included. DDS is Microsoft's DirectDraw Surface container: the pixel data is usually BCn block compression, where DXT1 packs a 4×4 pixel block into just 8 bytes (0.5 bits per pixel). This converter handles DXT1, DXT3, DXT5 and uncompressed 24/32-bit RGB. Newer blocks — BC4/BC5/BC6H/BC7 and cube maps — are rejected with an explicit warning and a supported-format list, never a silently broken image.

FAQ

What is a DDS file?

DDS (DirectDraw Surface) is Microsoft's texture container, ubiquitous in game assets and modding. It stores mipmaps and usually BCn block-compressed pixels — designed for GPUs, not for opening in Paint.

Why did my texture come out with the wrong colors?

Usually it isn't wrong — DXT1 stores colors as RGB 565, which rounds channel precision. If the output looks structurally correct but a tool online gave different pixels, that tool may be guessing at gamma. We decode exactly what the blocks store.

My DDS says "format not supported" — now what?

The file uses a block this decoder doesn't handle: BC4/BC5 (normals), BC6H/BC7 (modern games), or a cube map. The warning says exactly which. For those, use a desktop tool like GIMP with the DDS plugin or texconv.

Do mipmaps get converted too?

No — only level 0, the full-resolution image. Mip levels are progressively smaller copies the GPU picks at runtime; for editing and viewing you only need the top one.
