GIF to WebP Converter

Two-way converter: drop a GIF to get a smaller animated WebP, or drop a WebP to get a GIF. Static images convert instantly with the browser’s own codecs. Animations run on a self-hosted ffmpeg.wasm engine (loaded on demand, about 25MB the first time, then cached by your browser) — nothing is uploaded, ever.

The 2026 state of GIF to WebP

Field2026 state
Static GIF → WebPNative canvas encode — instant, works Chrome/Firefox/Safari 16+
Animated GIF → WebPffmpeg.wasm (self-hosted) — keeps every frame and delay
Static WebP → GIFNative decode → our NeuQuant GIF89a encoder
Animated WebP → GIFffmpeg.wasm decode → re-encoded GIF (≤256 colors/frame)
First animation load~25MB wasm download, progress shown; browser-cached afterward
FallbackIf wasm fails: honest static-frame export + notice — never a silent freeze
Loop & timingAnimation loop count and per-frame delays preserved
Safari noteAnimated WebP plays in Safari 14.1+; older Safari shows the GIF fallback world
Size realityGIF→WebP typically saves 25–75% bytes; noisy source GIFs save less
PrivacyAll local — the wasm engine ships from this site, not a CDN

FAQ

Why does the first animated conversion load ~25MB?

Browsers can’t encode animated WebP natively, so animation runs on an ffmpeg build compiled to WebAssembly. The engine files (~25MB) download once, then your browser caches them; the progress bar shows exactly what’s happening. Static images never load it.

Will my animated GIF stay animated?

Yes — the ffmpeg engine converts every frame with its original timing. If the engine fails to load (slow network, blocked storage), we offer a clearly-labeled static first-frame export instead of pretending the animation survived.

Does WebP to GIF keep the animation too?

Yes. Animated WebP is decoded by the same engine and re-encoded as GIF89a with a 256-color palette per frame (GIF’s hard limit). Colors outside the palette are quantized — photos may shift slightly.

Why convert GIF to WebP at all?

WebP compresses animation far better than GIF’s 1989-era LZW: typical stickers and memes drop 25–75% in size with the same visual result. It’s the single easiest win for page speed when you have many GIFs.
