FAQ
Which size should a favicon be?
Use one ICO containing 16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels — that’s the default here. Browsers pick 16 or 32 for tabs, Windows uses 32/48 for shortcuts and 256 for the large icon view. A single 256px icon technically works, but multi-size files look sharp everywhere.
Why is the ICO full of PNG data?
Since Windows Vista, .ico entries can embed PNG-compressed images instead of raw bitmaps. It keeps files tiny (a 256px icon stays ~50KB instead of 260KB raw) and every modern OS and browser reads it. We build exactly that structure — check the bytes with any hex viewer.
Can I convert JPG to ICO?
Yes — drop JPG or JPEG files directly. The image is decoded, scaled to your chosen sizes and re-encoded as PNG inside the ICO, so the result always has proper alpha support.
Does this work for app icons too?
Yes — desktop shortcuts, Electron apps, and game launchers all read standard ICO. Pick 16–48 for classic shortcuts, add 128/256 if the app shows large tiles (Windows 10/11 Start menu).
